The Lure of Post-Hoc Rationalisation

Bowled Over’ (Oil painting on canvas by Alan Rayner, 2008)

To examine an outcome

Then, via a selective process

Eliminating all that might have been,

To see that as its cause

Is a favourite trick of the smart-arse

Mind-in-a-box -

Too clever for its own or others’ good -

Which exempts itself

From all around

And crows

.

Oh! My Goodness, Me!

This is what is meant to be

My Destiny

Traced back through His story

Along a connecting line of descent

To a starting point

Exempted from all around

Its Self

.

Like a river flowing to Sea

Unable to see its Sink

As its oceanic Source

Remote from where it sprang from

.

Again and again

The High & Mighty Fall for It

Hook, Line & Sinker

Swallowed Whole

Bringing tumbling in their wake

Their followers and overlorded serfs

Down to Earth,

Out to Sea and

Into Sky

.

Meanwhile

The Silent void holds its Peace

Forever

Ever ready to receive

And restore to life refreshed

From Grace

.
